Lelant Saltings

On the Hayle estuary in the beautiful St Ives Bay - designated an
Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or AONB

Where you'll learn:

My home in Lelant – right next to the Hayle estuary and bird nature reserve.

We can walk to Porthkidney Beach, my local beach, in about 15 minutes along the Saltings which conveniently is also part of the famous Southwest Coast Path and is very idyllic. Walking further along the coast this route passes Carbis Bay, where the G7 was held in June 2021 and walking a little further still, we reach the stunning seaside resort of St Ives, where Englishplus was founded in 2013 and where I used to live from 1987 until 2021. This walk takes just over an hour on foot or about 12 minutes by car.

St Ives was my home for over 30 years. This absolute 'jewel in the crown of the Cornish Riviera' gets totally overrun in the summer, but is it any wonder? The seaside town boasts 5 spectacular, but rather different beaches, a TATE Gallery, and loads of smaller, privately owned galleries as it's blessed with an abundance of creative folk, attracted by the special and fabulous light that even the great William Turner once found irresistible.

It regularly produces British surf champions, has great little pubs with Cornish ale and cider, and still has a working fishing harbour. The restaurants are in a class of their own: forget that nonsense of British food not being up to scratch - this is where it's at!

Just up the road from Englishplus, about a 20-minute drive away, you can find neolithic standing stones and burial chambers, which though not quite Stonehenge, still make you appreciate what a long way we have come.
